"Satyr" Gilles Demarteau & François Boucher
Medium: Conte
I chose "Satyr" by Gilles Demarteau and François Boucher because I enjoy the medium, looser marks, and composition. First, I gridded and proportioned the artwork onto my paper. I began building value various parts of the drawing because I don't like staying in one spot for too long. I feel like I was able to capture the artist mark and hatching. This was a victory to me because I'm not very experienced with conte. However, one of the major problems I came across was smudging and smearing. Sometimes I overdid a hatching section, and it kind of smudged the lines so that they were less sharp than I would like. Conte also smudged on my paper when I left it in my portfolio. This taught me that I should take greater care in protecting my artwork and improving my craftsmanship. I think my extra paper with random conte marks on it left some smudging on my artwork paper. I learned that I will also need to make sure conte on my palms or hands don't smudge the paper, especially since it is quite hard to erase.
