Self Portrait Sculpture - Clay

As I'm pretty inexperienced with sculpture, the process of creating a portrait sculpture was difficult. First- learning the technique and capturing likeness. It starts with a big blob of clay to be molded into my face. The tools we used were also unfamiliar, but I got more comfortable with them with time. Creating the eyes was the most difficult part of the face. It was hard to capture the eye shape, amount of pupil space, and proportion. I also had to make sure the side view matched up. I focused mainly on shaping the facial structure, and I think I got an okay likeness. I feel like the head shape and cheekbone structure could use more work.  Working in three dimensions challenged me to think about balance, proportion, and how the sculpture looks from all angles. Making the bangs were a little had to capture since my bangs in real life have a mind of its own, so my reference is quite inconsistent. Overall, this piece taught me how sculpture can capture identity and feeling, not just what someone looks like on the surface. It's definitely a medium that I'm interested in, but I felt more challenged.
